Trailwork in Molybdenite Creek area

About a month ago, we heard there was some critical trail work done on the Molybdenite Creek to Long Valley Trail area near the Little Walker River in the Bridgeport/Sonora Pass area.  The fading singletrack on the Long Valley side is seeing some more use.  The aspen section of trail had all of the downed logs sawed or moved.  This is one of the most fun parts of the ride.
Right NOW should be the perfect time to go rip through the fall colors!

As for the most current conditions; we're not sure. Let us know if you've been up or heard anything.

For more information on the rides up there, check out: Mountain Biking Mammoth & the Eastern Sierra.

Comments sought on Mammoth Mountain Bike Park Trail Proposal
The Inyo National Forest, Mammoth Ranger District is soliciting comments on a Mammoth Mountain Bike Park Trail Construction Project proposal.  Mammoth Mountain Ski Area (MMSA), a permittee on the Inyo National Forest, has proposed to construct 2.5 miles of mountain bike trails in the vicinity of, and in conjunction with the operation of  the Discovery Chair (Chair 11). All proposed trail construction is within the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area permit boundaries.
The purpose of this proposed project is to provide new terrain, recreation opportunities, better connectivity, and better separation between differently skilled riders within Mammoth Mountain Bike Park. The proposed projects are needed to provide two new progressive, beginner-level mountain bike trail experiences and a connector from the top of the Discovery Chair to a pre-existing, more difficult trail.
The Forest Service has made a preliminary assessment that this proposal falls within a category of actions listed in the Forest Service NEPA Handbook that are excluded from documentation in an Environmental Assessment (EA) or Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and that there are no extraordinary circumstances that would preclude use of the category regarding Construction and Reconstruction of Trails.
Both the bike trail project and the winter projects are subject to the notice and comment provisions of 36CFR 215.3. The public comment period ends 30 days following the date of publication of the legal noticeswhich are expected to be May 17. Those wishing to comment on either proposal should not rely upon dates or timeframes provided by any other source. Only those who provide comment or otherwise express interest in the proposed action during the comment period will be eligible to appeal the decision.
Written comments for either project must be submitted to Allison Jackson, Winter Sports Specialist, Inyo National Forest, P.O. Box 148, Mammoth Lakes, CA  93546. Electronic comments may be sent toajackson@fs.fed.us in the following acceptable formats: plain text (.txt), rich text (.rtf), Adobe (.pdf), or Word (.doc). Written comments may also be submitted by fax (760.924.5537) or by hand-delivery to the Mammoth Ranger Station during normal business hours, excluding holidays.
Information about the proposed project and maps will be posted on the Inyo National Forest website on May 17. Additional information may also be obtained from the Project Leader, Allison Jackson, at 760.924.5510. -Press Releases

Mountain Biking is Exploding!

Here's an example from the UK:

Firms urged to act over growth in mountain biking

"Scottish companies are being urged to take advantage of a predicted 30% growth in mountain biking in Scotland over the next five years.

The call was made by Tourism Intelligence Scotland (TIS), a joint venture by Scottish Enterprise, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and VisitScotland.

TIS said the activity already generated £119m a year for the Scottish economy.
Market share is predicted to increase to £155m in the next five years..."

Support New Singletrack in Santa Cruz

http://www.mbosc.org/local-parks/pogonip/petition/

From the MBOSC blog:

PETITION TO SUPPORT THE POGONIP MULTI-USE TRAIL

In July 2010, the Santa Cruz City Council approved in concept the creation of a new multi-use trail in Pogonip. The proposed trail would parallel the eastern boundary of the open space.
The 1.5 mile long trail would connect Golf Club Drive with the U-Con Trail and the Rincon Trail and will be family and beginner friendly. It will offer a spectacular scenic single track trail experience through redwood trees and bay tree groves. This will be a much more pleasant way to get to Upper Campus than riding along Hwy 9, the train tracks or parking at the Rincon Parking lot.
This trail was proposed as a long term mitigation to thetransient camping and herion dealing that had taken root in the area. The SCPD, Park Rangers, MBOSC and Take Back Santa Cruz has had clean up events and removed tonnes of trash but without a long term solution those problems will come back. Bringing positive use into that area will displace the negative use. This has been a proven local strategy because the 1999 implementation of the U-Conn trail displaced the transients in that area.
The benefits of the 1.5 mile multi-use trail (MUT) goes far beyond the scope of the reducing negative use. Some other long term benefits include:
  • Provides a safe (but off road) eastern bike route into UCSC for commuters.
  • Provides additional recreational facilities for families, residents and visitors.
  • Provides more economic opportunities for downtown businesses.
The approval of the multi-use trail is not a done deal. The review and plan will probably go before the Santa Cruz City Council in early 2012.
We need your help in getting this trail approved.
The trail plan and environmental review comment period has ended but you can read though those documents and submit comments to the Santa Cruz City Council at: citycouncil@cityofsantacruz.com.
Please consider signing the petition below in support of the multi-use trail. MBOSC will submit this petition to the City Council when the Pogonip multi-use trail plan is presented for public comment – sometime in January of February of the new year.
Consider printing and distributing this poster in support of the Pogonip Multi-Us Trail.
